Murihiku Marae

Murihiku Marae 2010……

A Marae is a very special place to go to have special occasions.
The wharenui is called Te Rakitauneke it was named after a man who was an ancestor.
Murihiku Marae was opened in 1990.
The kahurangi stone represent every story the iwi has.
The patterns on the roof are called kowhaiwhai.
There were some pacific people that carved the patterns on the wall.
There were 92 people that worked there when it was first opened.
We have a kaikorero that is a male to speak for us and then the other male kaikorero stands and responds to his speech.
We have a kaikaranga that calls for us when we are ready to go onto the marae and it’s the tangata whenua who calls us on the Marae.
A Marae is a very good place for special occasions and I like Maraes because when I get to go in I get to know more about Maori people and their culture their iwi (tribe), Also the part I like the most about Maraes is their beautiful patterns on the wall and the beautiful kowhaiwhai pattern on the roof.

Toheroa Gathering.

Toheroa are shellfish they move with their tongue they are hard to catch because they are fast movers through the sand. So you have to be fast to catch them
To gather Toheroa you must have a permit, some buckets for the Toheroa,
some friends and some ready to go hands to dig for Toheroa. You will be
fined if the Toheroa are not 100mm long, bigger than 100mm is ok the fine is $500.00.
The Toheroa must be eaten on the day you stated on the permit this is usually a special occasion. Toheroa are harmful to people because they hide in the sand.
They will die if they are out of the sand.

Murihiku Marae

Murihiku Marae…

A Marae is very important to the Maori people and it is also used for special occasion like weddings and tangi (Funerals).

Murihiku marae is an important place for many people especially the people who belong to this marae.

When you walk into the wharenui it has a special name called Te Rakitauneke, it has been named after a special ancestor that was buried on Bluff Hill, he is still important to the marae and their people.

About 92 people helped make the marae and about ¼ of these people were pacific island people. The Maori were kind enough to let them leave a bit of their heritage so they painted a pattern on the wall.

A very important rule was that when the men were carving the walls in the wharenui the ladies were not allowed in the wharenui.

If you are in a Powhiri process each ropu (group) would have a Kaikaranga other wise known as a caller, when the tangata whenua Kaikaranga does her call then the other group calls back until the visitors arrive at the wharenui.

The building of the marae began in 1986 and finished in 1990, so many people put effort into the marae to make it beautiful and special.

When you are in the wharenui with another ropu, each of you will have a kaikorero, a kaikorero is always a male and he does a speech. If you are the guest then you will give money for the tangata whenua to look after the marae, this is called a koha.

Each marae has a iwi tribe that they are proud to represent in a lot different of ways. A marae has a beautiful nature behind it and legends that will be here for eternity.

We finished the snack and went outside to get into her little red car and went for a drive then we came back to her house and got out the game called police alert its a fun game where you have to go around the board and pick up these little chips. that was fun. I won that game by then it was time to have lunch I was happy because I was hungry when we had finished eating we did some sewing then after 1 hour we had afternoon tea. I had to go home after that.

My Pop

My Pop

My Pop... if I ever need help I contact my Pop. He helps my family in so many ways like building or plumbing or even just a ride to school. He is the coolest and funniest even when he gets on Nana's nerves. Other peoples Pops are not nearly as cool as mine ( well that is what I think any way ) My Pop is in every way generous and kind. He built Nana's house from scratch,it is the best house. I love my Pop and he loves me.
