The end of term came around very quickly and there were many highlights we did not manage to share with our followers throughout the term.

Please check out our PhotoPeach snapshot of the past terms highlights...

Transit of Venus

What is a Transit of Venus?

When Venus passes directly between earth and the sun, we see the distant planet as a small dot gliding slowly across the face of the sun. Historically, this rare alignment is how we measured the size of our solar system. The view is like a front row seat to the transit method, by which we find planets around distant stars.

The last transit of Venus occurred June 5-6-2012. The next pair of Sun-Venus-Earth alignments will be December 2117 and 2125. Look for a transit of Mercury in 2016.

People across the globe witnessed and celebrated science in action. Here at New River Primary Mr Esler brought along his huge scientific telescope and each classroom got the opportunity to see venus passing across the face of the sun.

It was very important not to look through the telescope as it is dangerous to the naked eye.  You will see in the photo below that Mr Esler had a mirror to reflect the view from the telescope so we could all view this event safely.

SKYPING

On Thursday 28th of June 2012 room12 skyped Miss Irvines class in Christchurch. It was fun. What we had to do was tell her class what our highlights were. My highlights were! 7x tables: my goals were to be 9x tables 1 min or 2 min but it doesn't matter. I feel glade because I will learn how to do my 9x tables. My other highlight is... Netball: It is fun because it is my favorite sport. Also when I first started I was Goal keep. I love been goal keep because you don't have to run around the court. Posted by Theissen:)

Staying in Christchurch a new experience...

Shortly after 6pm I boarded my flight bound for the Garden City - Christchurch. I was on my way to an ALIM seminar that will be held overv2 days. It was a great flight as I was able to reminisce over old times with my friend whom I will call Miss Hayes. Laughter amidst the jokes was a sure way to make the time fly. As fast as a bullet we landed in Christchurch around 8pm. We walked down a long skinny tunnel like a walk way...hearing the odd bing bong over the loud speaker. Now it was time to meet our corporate taxi driver, collect our bags and head to our hotel - Chateau on the Park. We were greeted by friendly staff to check in before receiving our keys for the room that will be mine for 2 nights. As we walked towards the lift, right before us were steel poles supporting the ceiling to the second floor. Hardboard reinforced windows where there once was glass and uneven ground with safety cones to warn us not to trip. What will the night ahead bring as I sleep in this building damaged by a monster of an earthquake in the recent past?

Super Saturday

On a Super Saturday I was at my Dads house because my sister Mystery had  netball so we went to my Dads house on Friday after school.

First we went in the car with my Dad and got to Southland stadium because that was where Mystery was playing netball.

Then Mystery started her game at 1.30pm and she was playing center then wing attack and Aurora won the game because they had 25 points and Hargest had 4 points.

Finally the game finished and we went to the car and opened the windows  because it was a super sunny day and my sister Mystery was sweaty.  I felt sweaty too and I was also glad that my sister won the game against Hargest.

New River Road Safety Week

This week is International Road Safety Week and it is a great opportunity for us to run a magnifying glass over our schools road safety issues and/or develop greater road safety awareness in our community.

Road Safety Week is all about community engagement to help get the road safety message out there!

New River Road Safety Week Activities:

1.    Practice crossing the road with your class. Remember to “Look all ways and always look!”

2.    Encourage students to be highly visible on or near the roads by wearing our New River High Viz Vests.  Make an effort to remind students to be wearing their vests daily.

3.    Students could create a road safety slogan.  This could then be shared on their class blog or in the school newsletter.

4.    WOW day. WOW = Walk or Wheel.  We will have a WOW day this FRIDAY 11th May .  Students are encouraged to walk or wheel to school and can then use their wheels on the court at lunchtime.

What are you doing this week?  Leave a comment to tell us about it.
